Orange County Alliance for Community Health Research

The Orange County Alliance for Community Health Research(the Alliance), part of UC Irvine School of Medicine Institute for Clinical and Translational Science (ICTS), consists of the leaders of local community-based organizations, practicing physicians, healthcare organizations, governmental representatives, community groups and UC Irvine researchers.

It aims to:

  • Create a bi-directional mechanism for input and education about challenges to community well-being and research at UC Irvine
  • Build mutually beneficial campus-community partnerships to bridge the gap between UC Irvine and the community
  • Collaboratively redirect research to respond to community health needs

The goal of the Alliance is to foster a partnership between the community and UC Irvine committed to working together to develop, implement and disseminate clinical discoveries that result in improved health status for all the diverse communities of Orange County.

The Alliance meets quarterly to vote on grant applicants, discuss university-community engagement practices and develop guidelines for the upcoming academic year.

Building Sustainable Community-Linked Infrastructure to Enable Health Science Research

The Orange County Center for Community Health Research (OCCCHR) represents an exciting academic-community partnership opportunity that will build upon strong collaborative relationships to improve the way health research is conducted in Orange County.

The mission of the organization is to improve the health and well-being of Orange County’s diverse population through collaborative research and by supporting sustainable research and dissemination of evidence-based best practices to inform local health decisions.

The alliance will:

  • Utilize a state-of-the-art web-based resource portal and videoconference technology to improve information dissemination, technical assistance, networking, training and mentoring between the universities (UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton) and community-based organizations
  • Empower participants to work together in developing research projects and ensure equitable partnerships between community agencies and university researchers
  • Focus the collaborative strengths of community agencies and the universities toward developing an academic-community partnered health agenda and research projects
  • Lead team building workshops utilizing collaborative models that have proven to be successful planning strategies in Orange County

The infrastructure provides the opportunity to improve utilization of health data to develop evidence-based community research priorities, and increase community research capacity to engage in community-based participatory research. Through the OCCCHR, community and academic partners will collaborate to identify the priority heath research issues of the county and develop a joint health research agenda and projects targeting those health concerns.
