Many key components of clinical research resources are provided by expert research registered nurses who are experienced in the care of participants - many of whom have myriad health conditions throughout their lifespan.
In addition to providing and coordinating clinical care, research RNs have a central role in collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to ensure the completion of research objectives in a safe and efficient manner, maintaining integrity of protocol procedures and accuracy of research data collection. They understand the specific demands of research, including:
Protocol requirements may include detailed clinical assessment and data collection, which may include clinical observations, vital signs, clinical measurements, phlebotomy, IV placement and management, administration of investigational drugs, specimen collection, as well as pharmacokinetic support and/or documentation of research participant reported outcomes.
Research nurses also provide basic lab prep including centrifuging, aliquotting and shipping. Targeted assessments, research documentation and assistance with ensuring appropriate clinical design (correct lab tubes and volumes, timing of tests, etc.) is an important function to ensure accurate data. The staff is able to learn study-specific procedures as needed. In the past this has included certifications in the Brazelton Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale, PASI, allergy testing, uroflow documentation, neuropsychiatric assessment scales, autoclaving, etc.
The nursing care delivered by this team is given in two outpatient clinics, one at UC Irvine Medical Center and one on the UC Irvine campus.
The staff also is able to provide some off-site assistance, off-hours research support, and with advanced approval and logistical arrangements can assist with preparing inpatient nursing staff at UC Irvine Medical Center for research. The clinics have routine supplies and equipment and can accommodate specialty equipment and supplies on a space-available basis.
