The New Interventional Suite with Jan Kimpen, MD, Chief Medical Officer and SVP at Philips

The CHOC UCI Pediatric Data Science Hub is hosting Jan Kimpen, MD, PhD, the Philips Chief Medical Officer, a position he has held since January 2016. Jan leads the senior Philips clinical community, which consists of approximately 60 MDs and other healthcare professionals. He is the executive sponsor of the Future Health Index, an annual global survey focused on digitalization, access to care, and integration of health systems.

Topic: Neuropathogenesis of COVID-19
Speaker: Avindra Nath, PhD
The talk will discuss the various types of neurological manifestations with SARS-CoV-2 infection in the acute, subacute and chronic phases of the illness, pathological findings, the overlap between long-COVID and other post-viral syndromes and potential long-term impact. It will emphasize the gaps in knowledge and possible therapeutic targets. A comparison will be made to other pandemics. Topic: Why you should care about the choroid plexus
Speaker: Edwin Monuki, MD, PhD
In this talk, Dr. Monuki will discuss common and highly prevalent pathologies of the choroid plexus that precede the earliest biomarkers and neuropathologies of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). These findings raise the possibility of causal roles for choroid plexus dysfunction in AD initiation. Note: this event will be held virtually via Zoom and In-Person in Herklotz Conference Room .

Community Lecture: Craig Walsh, PhD

Topic: The Impact of T Cells in Neurodegenerative Disease and Regenerative Therapies
Dr. Walsh's research is focused on understanding the mechanisms that control adaptive immune tolerance to self. His lab is concerned primarily with T cells, and how these immune cells normally avoid reaction against self-tissues. They are curious about the interaction between T cells and neural stem cells, with an interest in developing approaches to treat autoimmune diseases of the brain such as multiple sclerosis.
