The ICTS held a special conference focusing on "Creating a Learning Health System-Medical Home for Chronically ill Children... and Beyond on March 5, 2018. This conference brought together key UCI School of Medicine leadership, faculty, researchers and physicians to learn from experts in the field of implementation, quality and design, and research discovery regarding the Learning Health System (LHS). The expects included: Dr. Charles Friedman from the University of Michigan, Dr. Christopher Forrest from Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Dr. Peter Margolis from Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and Dr. William Smoyer from Nationwide Children's Hospital of the Ohio State University.
The Daylong conference provided those in attendance the opportunity to learn from the experts who provided lectures on the basics of a LHS. Examples of LHS applied to pediatric research, principles for improving outcomes with a LHS, summarizing barriers to integrating clinical care and research program models to overcome barriers along with real world case studies of successful implementation of a LHS.
After the lecture portion of the day, those in attendance were led in group discussion to identify key individuals with the bandwidth and commitment of planning, implementing and evaluating a future LHS on the UC Irvine campus. Slides for the conference can be found here.
