Institutional Review Board (IRB) Support

MSRP students benefit from administrative support when submitting IRB applications for their independent research projects. The IRB office on campus also has a number of resources that students may find helpful as well. Students should first consult their primary research mentor when planning an IRB, and the mentor will need to initiate the application in Kuali Research.

When initiating an IRB application, the following steps can be utilized:

  1. Have a meeting with your primary research mentor to discuss what level of IRB review will be required for your application (exempt, expedited, full committee review, etc.).
    • Guidance for research that is Exempt from review can be found here.
    • Guidance for research that will require expedited review can be found here.
  2. Review IRB’s Protocol Preparation Checklist to determine what external documents/criteria may be needed to submit with your application.
  3. Your research mentor as the Lead Researcher will initiate the application in Kuali Research Protocols.
    • You (the student) and any other students working on the project will be added to the application protocol as co-researchers, and will be able to edit the protocol once added.
  4. Once submitted, watch for emails from Kuali Research or any IRB analysts/officials who may contact the research team with additional information needed, questions regarding the application, and approval notices.
  5. Amendments to the application may be submitted after approval if any changes to the research study occur. Amendments are not required for any non-human subjects research projects or research that was exempt from review.
