What we do

The Dissemination and Implementation Unit’s mission is to support innovative approaches to identifying, understanding, and developing strategies for overcoming barriers to the adoption, adaptation, integration, scale-up and sustainability of evidence-based interventions, tools, policies, and guidelines.

Who we are

Miriam Bender, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Sue & Bill Gross School of Nursing at UC Irvine. She is a care delivery and implementation scientist with a particular interest in understanding the relationships between the organization and implementation of care delivery, multi-professional practice dynamics, and patient care quality and safety outcomes. She was a 2016 Fellow in the NIH Training Institute for Dissemination and Implementation Research in Health (TIDIRH) and currently serves as a reviewer for the NIH Science of Implementation in Health and Healthcare (SIHH) Study Section.

Stephen Schueller, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Psychological Science and Informatics at UC Irvine. He is a clinical psychologist and mental health services researcher whose work focuses on improving the accessibility and availability of mental health services with technology. He was a 2017-2018 fellow in the Implementation Research Institute and serves on the Editorial Board for Implementation Research and Practice.

How we Facilitate Clinical and Translational Science

Defining Dissemination and Implementation

Dissemination refers to active efforts to spread knowledge and innovations based on research findings. Implementation refers to active efforts to increase the integration of evidence-based innovations and interventions into routine, real-world practices and settings.

The Dissemination and Implementation (D&I) Unit at UCI aims to help the UCI community in moving from scientific discovery to broader application locally, regionally, and nationally.

Research efforts that identify, understand, and develop strategies for overcoming barriers to adoption, adaptation, integration, scale-up, and sustainability of evidence-based interventions, tools, policies, and guidelines are referred to as dissemination and implementation science. A definition supported by funding announcements in this area released by the National Institute of Health: (PAR-19-274, R01; PAR-19-275, R21; PAR-19-276, R03).
