Creating a Learning Health System Research Plan
California State Referendum Proposition 3 (Children’s Hospital Bond Act) has allocated $30 million to UCI Health. The monies are earmarked for California children’s hospitals to improve access and care to underinsured and underserved children in our region. ICTS has been tasked to develop the research agenda for a new UCI Center for Comprehensive Child Healthcare, a medical home providing single point of access care for children with chronic diseases and complex conditions. Following our initial LHS workshop in February 2018, we began the process of developing LHS research plans for two specific projects focused on 1) optimizing care for children with complex conditions and 2) improving care for seniors suffering from abuse. The latter involves a collaboration with UCI’s Center of Excellence in Elder Abuse and Neglect. The process to develop LHS research in these two areas is shown above.

Creating a Learning Health System for a Pediatric Medical Home in Orange County
A consortium of regional leaders met April 24, 2019 to plan a new Pediatric Medical Home in Orange County from a Learning Health Systems framework. Dr. Charles Friedman, Department Chair of Learning Health Sciences; Division Chief, Learning and Knowledge Systems; Professor of Information; and Professor of Public Health at the University of Michigan Medical School led discussions around the details of this project for our particular region and populations. Participants in the meeting included leaders from CHOC, OC Healthcare Agency, UCLA Informatics, UCI Medical Center, Kaiser Permanente, CalOptima, patient and family stakeholders, UCI Nursing, and SAP.
