Project Title: Pioneering Personalized Medicine for Neurogenic Lower Urinary Tract Dysfunction in patients with Multiple Sclerosis through Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning

Dr. Olivia H. Chang, MD, MPH is an Assistant Professor in Urology and OB/GYN. She received a 2-year ICTS KL2 grant for the study, “Pioneering Personalized Medicine for Neurogenic Lower Urinary Tract Dysfunction (NLUTD) in patients with Multiple Sclerosis through Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.” Her mentors are Dr. Felicia Lane (Urogynecology), Dr. Michael Demetriou (Neurology) and Dr. Peter Chang (Neuroradiology/Director of the UCI Center for Artificial Intelligence). Dr. Chang will develop innovative machine-learning models to predict overactive bladder (OAB) treatment outcomes and upper urinary tract injuries in patients with MS and externally validate it in a real-life cohort of patients. By creating condition-specific and patient-centered predictive modeling, she hopes to generate personalized predictive outcomes for treatment and counseling. This proposal has the potential to individualize counseling, improve treatment outcomes and reduce invasive testing in a cohort of patients with a progressive and debilitating condition. The study will generate pilot data and ML modeling for the treatment of NLUTD. The results will serve as the foundation for a mid-career K23 application where the models developed in this proposal can be externally validated to other neurologic disease conditions.
