As part of the Summer Online Research program at UCI SOM, under the directorship of the MSRP faculty co-director, Dr. Behnoosh Afghani, 10 second year UCI medical students submitted abstracts on topics related to health disparities to Western American Federation of Medical Research in Northern CA, and all were accepted.

Summer Online Research Program is a 3-week program designed to increase the exposure of high school students to research methods and inspire them to do research as a future health professional. In 2023, 60 high school students and 10 medical student coaches participated in two 3-week sessions. Under the supervision of the faculty mentor (Dr. Afghani) and medical students, the high school students completed a literature review of a topic related to health disparities. The projects were submitted to the Western American Federation of Medical Research, and all were accepted as abstract presentations. The medical students who will be presenting the research and their topics are summarized below. Of 10 medical students, 5 were completing other research projects as part of the ICTS MSRP program.
